We invite you to our official launch event on Wednesday 25th January at the heart of Glasgow’s City Centre for a night of networking, learning, and a round of stunning Virtual Reality experiences. Step into the incredible Virtual Reality Dome for a shared group experience, or try the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive virtual headsets to experience immersive visualisation like never before.
A new virtual reality device that will help architects and designers create dementia-friendly buildings and spaces by understanding how dementia affects a sufferer’s vision is now available.
This life-changing invention, which is a market first and will be known as Virtual Reality Empathy Platform (VREP), can be used in the design of new buildings such as care homes, hospitals or sheltered housing, or to audit existing buildings and environments.
There are currently more than 800,000 people in the UK living with dementia, a figure that is expected to rise to 1.7 million by 2051. Dementia costs the UK economy £26.3 billion per year – more than cancer and heart disease combined.
People with dementia can see things very differently from others, with objects often appearing smaller, dimmer and less colourful than they really are, which can be frightening and confusing. By using the device to see things through the eyes of someone with dementia, architects and designers will be able to create homely and familiar environments that reduce accidents, lessen anxiety and help those with dementia live more independent lives by making them feel more confident, happy and secure.
The idea is the brainchild of David Burgher, director at Scottish Borders-based Aitken Turnbull Architects, who has developed the product in partnership with Glasgow CGI company Wireframe Creative 3D and Professor Mary Marshall, a leading expert in dementia and senior consultant at the Dementia Centre, HammondCare.
